The quickest shelter you can make in a pinch , is to find a pine , spruce ,ceder or tamarack 6-8 inches acrossed the bottom , at 4 feet for the bottom start to cut through the tree but not all the way through just enough so the tree falls but is still attach to the trunk ( your survival saw or your knife should handle this fine ) when the tree falls it is now on an angle and you can clear a space through the middle of the branches for yourself ,
the cleared branches can be weaved and plied out ( the finer needles can be put in the shelter to make a comfortable bed of browses ) side to make the shelter somewhat water and wind proof .
In the end you have a shelter that looks like a small cave made of branches , at the half way point between your shelter and the tree trunk you can make a small fire ( keep your fire small pine etc burns green as well ) the secret to making a good survival shelter is not to make it to big then it becomes to hard to keep warm , over the next little while I will post different types of shelters and one Saturday go out and make some that have shelters discussed here.
